Strength and Conditioning

Strength and Conditioning Coach: Lon Brettell

It is our goal that the athletes develop life long fitness habits, become educated about physical conditioning programs, and learn to make healthy lifestyle choices. Recognizing that physical conditioning is an integral part of on snow competition programs, our athletes engage in rigorous physical conditioning programs that are designed and closely monitored by the Team Killington coaches. Off snow training programs are created using a "scientific approach" to maximize the level of fitness for each athlete. Physical conditioning programs are based on periodization, which allows athletes to train effectively on snow and off snow, and are oriented toward allowing athletes to peak physically at optimum times during the competitive season. Team Killington athletes receive individual attention in developing strength and conditioning programs for the off season as well.

Physical Testing
Each Team Killington athlete engages in several testing parameters to determine their level of fitness in many different areas. In conjunction with Vermont Sports Medicine Clinic, the Team Killington staff conducts Cybex Muscle Strength Testing at the beginning of each year. The results from these tests are used to determine strength deficiencies and muscle imbalances, which can increase the risk of injury in some athletes. The U.S. Ski Team Medals Test measures balance, agility, strength, power and endurance. Athletes are expected to pass the Medals Test at the beginning of each school year. Those who need more work are given extra time with the coaches to help them rise to the minimums necessary for competition at the regional and national levels.

Facilities
Are at the new KMS weight room.

Alternative Training Program (ATP)
The Alternative Training Program was created to add an additional training session for each athlete that places emphasis on having fun through the use of non-traditional conditioning practices. Athletes use the pool in the Pico Sports Center for hydro training and other water based activities. The aerobic floor is used to implement team building and leadership skills by engaging in various exercises. The combination of training and an emphasis on creativity and fun has helped the program become a favorite for almost every athlete.

Collaboration with Vermont Orthopaedic
The coaching staff at Team Killington receives valuable assistance from the doctors and surgeons at the Vermont Orthopedic Clinic in Rutland and their on-site clinic at Killington Mountain. These doctors are among the best in the world and are consultants to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team and many other professional and amateur associations.  Vermont Orthopedic believes in our programs so strongly that they have donated weight-training equipment for the weight room at the KMS and given freely of their time to speak with and work with the athletes. This collaboration between coach and doctor has had a beneficial effect on injury rates. Team Killington has one of the lowest rates of serious injury suffered during training and competition of any training facility in the country.
