Killington continues to produce some of the top talent in the country when it comes to snow sports, boasting two more of its own taking Junior Olympics titles in freestyle skiing last week. Justin Filskov, 18, and Katy Bodzioch, 17, both members of the Killington Freestyle Team, came away with gold medals from the Junior Olympics held in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Filskov, of E. Wallingford, VT., had a score of 26.18, which included perfect scores in air.
"It's amazing that our freestylers took the top spots, " said their coach Deb Newson. "It's been an incredible year for the team, and Justin and Katy did the job under pressure. Katy ran from the sixth position in her second run. It's really tough to get on the podium from that position, but she had an outstanding second run."
Bodzioch, of Dunstable, Mass., took two seconds off her time in her second run and threw a helicopter for the first air and a double twister for the second. Her score was 24.88. She had the best turns/line score of the day.
Filskov is a student at University of Vermont and is taking a semester off to compete. Katy Bodzioch attends Dunstable High School, where she is a senior. Both train on Killington's Outer Limits, the steepest mogul slope in the East. Earlier this season, Killington freestyler Michael Morse placed first in the third of four F.I.S. Freestyle Nor-Am Competitions.
The Killington Freestyle Team has produced some incredibly successful and talented athletes have either been part of this program and have trained on this venue. Evan Dybvig, Luke Westerlund and Alex Wilson, Hannah Hardaway and Donna Weinbrecht ("The Queen of Bear Mountain") are all current US Ski team members who first cranked it up on Outer Limits and Devil's Fiddle. Other alumni, like Steve Desovich and Diana Williams, went the coaching road and are National team coaches.
