Wonder about a term you heard at the Olympics? Here's a quick list of words and phrases for freestylers. How does one pronounce Gnoza? GAH - NOSE - AH. Simple, really, once you get to know him. This webmaster has no idea, but he was born with it so we decided to keep it. Okay, how does one pronounce Dybvig? DIB - VIG, or just "Evan." It's the spelling that kills everyone. Air A mogul in the middle of a bump run that has been specially shaped with a shovel and is designed to give the athlete a huge jump and lots of hang time. There are two airs in a normal mogul field. This picture shows Coach Matt standing on top of one, making sure that the takeoff is straight and that the landing is large enough and leads properly into the bottom moguls. Devil's Fiddle D.F. parallels Outer Limits on Bear Mountain. We'll occasionally train there if the tourons get too annoying. Freeride Skiing in a half-pipe or terrain park. Freeriders typically use the short "fatty" skis, sometimes also known as "twin-tips" because the skis are shaped so they can be ridden backwards and forwards equally easily. Anything less would be uncivilized. And painful. Iron Cross I'm not sure I can define this without three paragraphs of blather so I'll just show you a picture. This particular iron cross was combined with a 360 degree spin (once around for you non-geometry folks) and the picture was taken at the apex of the trick when he was facing back up the hill. It was taken with a 200mm lens, f4, 1/500. Below him, you can see the air he used for this jump. The moguls above and below this air have been cropped out of the picture. Mogul, Bump Just a bump on a trail. They can be found anywhere that hasn't been groomed flat. The ones where we train have been built using the snowcats and lots of shovels. Outer Limits This trail is Killington's version of the double-black showpiece trail that every fool skis because it's steep, bumpy, and a great place to show off. Fortunately, it's good for us, too. There is a picture of Outer Limits Here. Tour-on An annoying combination of "tourist" and "moron." Somewhat like a leaf-peeper in that he's sitting way back and looking around at the world instead of looking where he's going. This gazing is usually the immediate prelude to a yard-sale, which is why he's so dangerous to those nearby. USST United States Ski Team. Team Killington has sent many skiers and coaches to the US Team, and even gotten a few of them back! Yard-Sale A crash. Wipeout. As my uncle once put it, "Going ass over teakettle." Once the skier stops moving, all equipment is separated from the skier and is spread out over the hill. A perfect yard sale has a certain symmetry to it. The poles and skis are sent out equally to either side, hat and goggles lie uphill on the previous mogul, and the skier himself is sliding down the hill on his backside.
